·        President Trump said in a statement that a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on an initial list of strategically important imports from China from July 6 and vowed further measures if Beijing struck back

o   In response, China’s Commerce Ministry said it planned to impose tariffs of similar size and intensity

o   Beijing has published its own list that targets $50 billion in U.S. goods, including soybeans, aircraft and autos

Corn: CN18 +4.5¢, CU18 +4.25¢, CZ18 +3.75¢, CH19 +3.75¢

  • Selling exhaustion, or profit taking to end the week
    • It seems that no one wanted to catch the falling knife
    • The market will fall until fundamentals step into play
    • Corn spreads are losing carry, this could be that fundamental play for a bottom to form
      • Lately, corn has followed wheat – July/Sept. Chicago wheat has lost 2 cents of carry today
      • Rain makes grain – last night’s rain fall totals hit areas of low soil moisture in Illinois and SE Iowa
      • It is expected that funds are now at an even position for corn
        • Some traders suggest they could be even 100k contracts short
        • CFTC will be out this afternoon, and then we can have a better idea of what they did the past week
      •  Soybean: SN18 -12.25¢, SQ18 -12.25¢, SX18 -11.50¢, SH19 -10.50¢
      • To say today has been volatile would be an understatement as the POTUS has announced the US will implement a 25% tariff on $50 BLM of goods from China
        • U.S. Customs and Border Protection are to begin collecting the new tariffs on July 6th
          • Will Trump be able to strike a deal with China before then???
      • Dry, hot weekend on the way, with the exception of northern rains in WI and IL
      • China threatens to implement retaliatory tariffs against U.S., with focus likely  to be placed on soybeans
        • Struggling soybean markets in Brazil and Argentina give U.S. leverage.
        • NOPA crush came in at 163.6 mbu vs 165.1 mbu estimate
          • The 163.6 mbu is still larger than last month’s 161 mbu and the 149.2 mbu crushed last May
          • Cumulative Sept-May crush is now 84 mbu ahead of LY
          • Wheat: KWN18 -1.5¢ MWN18 -5.25¢
          • Trade opened negatively in sympathy with the grain complex as news of tariffs threaten US exports
          • Wheat has traded both sides negative and positive today Argentina wheat planting progress slightly behind last
          • year but on par with the 3 year average
          • Canadian Food Inspections Agency reportedly found GMO wheat in Alberta, looks to be a non-disrupter in the market
          • Canadian spring wheat planting done and conditions look good across much of the area
